This is a panel targeted at senior graduate students and early-stage postdocs, focusing on what it is like looking for jobs during a period of great economic uncertainty.
The panelists will be a number of people who graduated in the 2008-2010 period (i.e., the great financial crisis and its immediate aftermath) and hold a panel discussion about what their career paths looked like, what issues they faced, and what their decision making criteria were at the time, and how they reflect upon it now.
Overall, the aim for this is less to give advice, than to lay out some of the factors that go into the job hunt, both academic and not. Specifically, we will include some discussion of things how things like family planning and financial stress bear upon choices like looking for postdocs versus looking for industry positions.
